The last time I ‘skated’ on ice was when I was perhaps five or six years ago in the midst of a snowy December. I was visiting a cousin in Bradford and one afternoon we decided to venture out to the local ice rink. I was super excited and imagined myself gliding gracefully upon the ice, not unlike a swan skilfully and effortlessly swimming across a lake. Of course, this was not to be, for as I slipped my already numb feet into the skates provided, I felt the shock of icy cold water filling my socks and my toes screamed ‘we hate you!’ and sulked for the rest of the day – and my felicitous fantasy faded into the brisk wind, leaving me feeling more than a little let-down. Thereafter, I managed only to grip determinedly at the sides of the rink and creep at a snail’s pace around the icy space. The only fond memory from that day was the coffee and cake afterwards at a warm and dry local cafe. As you may have deciphered, I have avoided ice-skating ever since.
Well, until now that is. Put skating at Somerset House and Tiffany & Co. together and you have me; surely London‘s ‘most glamorous ice-rink’ won’t fail me? And as it’s in my neighbourhood I really have no excuse not to take advantage of the festive activity. So sometime between 22 November 2011 and 22 January 2011, I shall be donning my snow pants (not exactly fashionista fare, but they are so wonderfully warm), woolly hat and scarf and finding my way to a pair of (dry) ice-skates at Somerset House. And though I can’t promise to be as swift or elegant on the ice as a figure-skater, I do intend to skate. I expect an evening of falling (safely) all over the ice and making an utter fool of myself, but I do believe it’s going to be a lot of fun.
