25Hours HafenCity, Hamburg, Germany

I think I spend way too much time exploring the plethora of hotels the world has to offer, though not because I’m constantly travelling (how I wish I were), but I’m always thinking about travelling and new experiences.

And though many would say (and have said rather abrasively, no less) that accommodation doesn’t matter when you are visiting a place for it’s culture, history and traditions; surely a hostel will do? But unfortunately (or not), I’ve always hated the idea of sharing my personal space (especially bathroom space) with strangers and I value hygiene and cleanliness too much to consider cheaper accommodation. But that is secondary to my foremost reason for seeking out stunning and spectacular hotels, which is the search for an escape from the ordinary and from the familiar.

You may have read the phrase ‘a home away from home’ on many a hotel site, and for some that is obviously an element of appeal. However, I don’t want to go away to something I already know and which, quite frankly doesn’t excite me. So you may have guessed that I was rather thrilled to discover the 25Hours Hotel Hafencity.

It’s the first hotel to be built on the up and coming Hamburg waterfront and offers a modern take on a sailor’s club. I love that the idea for the hotel was based on twenty-five stories from twenty-five sailors from a local seaman’s club. So not only do you get a completely unique hotel experience in terms of décor and architecture, but the stories breath life into every orifice of the hotel. Enjoy the pictures and see the evidence for yourself!

Unfortunately, the hotel hadn’t yet opened when I visited Hamburg earlier this year, but when I visit again (there is always hope), I know exactly where I’ll be staying.
