Qype: Foxcroft and Ginger in London
The day I had coffee at this lovely deli style coffee bar in Soho, I had in fact intended to try the coffee at Flat White. But at six in the evening, Flat White was heaving with trendy clientele that spilled out onto the narrow street outside.
I kept walking and soon found myself outside Foxcroft and Ginger. The door was closed and the barista appeared to be tidying up and getting ready to close shop. My veins were screaming out for their caffeine shot, so I tried the door which opened to my delight.
The barista confirmed that they were still open for an hour and I ordered a flat white. The deli/cafe reminded me of Fernandez and Wells, with it’s unfinished wood decor and their food displayed atop the counter. I do like this kind of rustic, frugal decor, but if all new coffee shops start dressing the same, the unfinished wood and exposed brick decor is going to lose its charm.
The barista said little, but expertly made my coffee of choice and then accompanied me with it to my seat which I found to be rather unique. My flat white was served in a dinky, prettily patterned china cup. They use Monmouth coffee beans, so tasty coffee was expected and it was delivered. Smooth and just strong enough. My only gripe about the coffee is that it was too short and as most good coffee places are in London, pricey.
I would have like to have purchased one of their mini cupcakes (which looked seriously delectable) too, but Foxcroft and Ginger don’t take credit/debit cards (a real let-down in my opinion) and I only had enough change for my coffee. It would be nice to come back again during the day and absorb the atmosphere when the place is more alive.
